This news story makes me very sad: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8161793.stm. With those kinds of numbers, odds are I have imbibed at one of these joints. Sob.

Well, it appears that I will be playing host to a Brit of Asian extraction, a southern European and a Chinese dude next weekend. What (besides getting them all completely hammered on Old Reserve) can one do to entertain this crowd?
-
Capt. Pig Leg
I was thinking a pub crawl would be nice and traditional, if a bit exhausting. Perhaps Cricket Club, In on the Green (note single n) and Galadari in quick succession?
-
hogwash
Sounds like a cunning plan. What are they going to eat though?
-
Capt. Pig Leg
Ooof. They’ll probably want to eat “traditional Sri Lankan food”. Where does one procure such animals in this town? Perhaps I’ll take them to the utterly ghetto beachside spot in Dehiwela. At least the “fried rice” ingredients cannot be closely examined because it’s quite dark there

I was also pondering this traditional SL food thing. Raja Bojun perhaps? http://www.travbuddy.com/Raja-Bojun-v191016

Dehiwela? Beachside? Are you referring to Wadiya and Wellawatte?
-
theotherwhitemeat
Wadiya is ghastly now. The best seafood is at Lagoon (hugely expensive) or at a couple of places on Mount beach whose names escape me at the moment.
-

Golden Mile? Also, Wadiya has always been quasi ghastly but can’t be beaten for location. Food is edible too.
-
theotherwhitemeat
The last time I went there (about a year and a half) it was less than edible. Absolutely awful.
-
-
Capt. Pig Leg
Yeah, I have also been less than impressed with Wadiya of late. There is a place called JoJos (?) on Mount Beach, close to the Golden Mile. That’s slightly ghetto but folks go get drunk on the beach there. The place in Dehiwela (called the Station) is similar but slightly more civilized

Has heard good things about the Station

So what is it with Sri Lankans and rice? Was out on my own last Sunday and decided to grab a sandwich instead of rice. Back home, my mother asks me what I had for lunch and I tell her and she goes all “Oh you poor dear! At least have some rice for dinner then!” on me. No, thank you very much. I quite dislike rice, actually.
Further annoying are Sri Lankans who travel half-way around the world, land, and from the very first day go looking for rice. People who are unwilling to sample the cuisine of the country they’re visiting should not be visiting in the first place. They should stay back home, where rice is aplenty.
Even further annoying are those who travel regardless, sit down to the best cuisine the host country has to offer and then produce a jar of katta sambol from a handbag (it’s always a handbag) and then proceed to offer it to everybody at the table, with an all-knowing “Oh go right ahead dear, put some on that. Otherwise you’ll never be able to eat this bland food.”
Just drop dead already, will you?
-
thevegetarian
It’s so true. I have relatives in France who force anyone who visits to eat pol sambol sandwiches when they go out touristing. Like…. on the steps of the Louvre. It’s fucking insane

Sha. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter surely can’t go wrong? Good support cast too. Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar is teh awesome.
